Digital engineering, the engineering R&D and product-engineering services segment, is consolidated mainly by the Indian IT majors and European engineering specialists. Between 2015 and 2025 we recorded 521 acquisitions of digital engineering firms worldwide, using proprietary counts from the Aventis Advisors deal database of more than 125,000 transactions. This article ranks the most active buyers and is part of our ranking of the top strategic acquirers of IT services companies. It is adjacent to, but distinct from, the larger software development line.

If you run an engineering R&D or product-engineering services firm, your likely buyers are the Indian IT majors adding domain depth and delivery scale, and the European engineering consolidators. Deal sizes here can run large for genuine niche capability, which sets this line apart from most of IT services.

Who’s buying digital engineering firms: 2015-2025 in numbers

Digital engineering M&A is smaller than the software development line it sits beside, and more concentrated. Buyers are led by the Indian IT majors moving into engineering R&D and by a handful of European engineering specialists. Accenture leads with 14 deals, ahead of Cognizant at 8, and the tail is thin, with most other active buyers at three or four. Deal sizes can be large: this line carries some of the biggest engineering-services transactions in our data, including Cognizant’s roughly $1.3 billion purchase of Belcan and the roughly $2.0 billion purchase of Aricent by Altran, a business that now sits inside the Capgemini group. Those figures come only from the minority of deals where a price was reported, and disclosed prices are a biased sample skewed toward the largest transactions, so they mark the top of the range rather than what a typical firm in this line changes hands for. Private equity is comparatively light here, with 48 of the 521 deals structured as buyouts.

The most active buyers of digital engineering firms at a glance

Deal counts cover announced acquisitions of digital engineering firms from 2015 to 2025, families consolidated. Lines in this series overlap: a transaction can appear in more than one of them, so counts are per line and not additive. Our software development article counts a wider universe that includes digital engineering.

Active private equity investors in digital engineering

Repeat PE buyers include Priveq, Trinity Hunt, Sagewind, and Bain Capital (two buyouts each). Private equity is lighter in this line than in most of IT services, since the leading buyers are strategic engineering and IT majors. See our ranking of the top private equity investors in IT services.

What this means if you’re selling a digital engineering firm

Buyers are the Indian majors (Cognizant, Tech Mahindra, HCL, L&T) and European engineering specialists (Alten, Etteplan, and Capgemini Engineering, the former Altran), buying for engineering talent, domain expertise, and delivery scale. Deals here can be large, though prices are reported on only a minority of them. If your business is more custom software than engineering R&D, see the adjacent software development cluster.
